Cat Head Biscuit Boys

9:00 PM - 9:00 PM Thursday January 9, 2014

The Cat Head Biscuit Boys are a genre bending southern acoustic string band based in Lafayette, Louisiana, comprised of musical misfits and miscreants who discovered that they just happen to work well with each other, despite their obvious lunacy. The tunes they choose to play are taken from all eras and styles of recorded music, with a preference for overlooked gems, many of which do not necessarily fit into what passes for “string band” music, but hell, we’ve already established the fact that they’re mad. The band features Louisiana music veteran and geezer Bruce “Weasel” McDonald on guitar and vocals – a founding member of many legendary Southwest Louisiana bands including Beausoleil, David Egan’s 20 Years of Trouble, Coteau, Rufus Jagneaux, The Bad Roads and Native Sons, to name a few – and has also spent time in New Orleans playing with the amazing George Porter Jr. of Meters fame. Virtuoso fiddler and vocalist Ben Shank (remember the Clickin’ Chickens with Dr. Tommy Comeaux?) comes with a musical pedigree and generally adds some class to the crew with his original songs and fiery fretwork. Musicologist and local radio host Roger Kash rounds out the band on mandolin and what some have described as “singing.” These three are aided and abetted by one of the best young rhythm sections in Louisiana: Dr. Josef (they don’t call him Doctor for nothing) Butts, one of Louisiana’s finest bassists, plays upright bass with the group, and much in demand local Lafayette drummer Charles Vincent provides the backbone and also plays a homemade rub-board of his own design. The group is also prone to inviting special guests on stage, so there’s never a dull moment.
