UL Lafayette Cajun and Zydeco Night
Come out and dance to Cajun and zydeco music played by UL Lafayette students and an all-star lineup of their instructors. The Dr. Tommy Comeaux Endowed Chair in Traditional Music at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is pleased to sponsor this free event. The public is invited to come dance with us!
The show will open with back-to-back Cajun bands. Pastiche is a group comprised of community members who wanted to do more than attend a weekly jam and signed up for a class with fiddler Chris Segura to help them forge a band. Segura was a co-founder and longtime member of Feufollet and is the media archivist at the university’s Center for Louisiana Studies. The Angelle Aces, UL Lafayette’s Cajun band class since 2011, is led on accordion by Lafayette’s own Roddie Romero, whose Hub City All-Stars have just released a new album.
Next up will be the Zydeco Ragin’ Steppers directed by Nathan Williams, Jr, of Lil Nathan and the Zydeco Big Timers. This student band plays a variety of zydeco (and a little swamp pop) from the 1950s up to today’s contemporary sounds.
The All-Star faculty band will close out the evening. It includes Roddie Romero, Nathan Williams, Jr., Chris Segura, Kevin Wimmer (Mamou Playboys, intermediate fiddle instructor), and Kelli Jones-Savoy (Feufollet, T Monde, songwriting instructor). The mission of the Dr. Tommy Comeaux Endowed Chair in Traditional Music at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is to stimulate interdisciplinary research on the foundations and diversity of traditional music worldwide and to advance the preservation, instruction, and performance of traditional music with an emphasis on traditions that have developed in Acadiana. The program began in the Fall of 2010. It is now possible to earn a B.A. in Music with a concentration in Traditional Music as well as a Music Minor with a Traditional Music emphasis. New classes and programs continue to be developed with involvement from musicians in the community.
