Downtown Brown & The Steamrollers
Downtown Brown & The Steamrollers is the super group you’ve never heard of. Seven musicians who meld amazingly diverse musical biographies to joyously plumb the depths of the American Song Book for gems obscure and familiar. Jazz, jump blues, standards, swing, folk, pop, you name it.
Gary Graef (guitar, vocals), a founding member of seminal South Louisiana band Rufus Jagneaux (“Opelousas Sostan”) has appeared on stage with Chuck Berry, Big Mama Thorton and Preston Frank, to name a few. Joshua Lazo (keyboard, saxophones) is an alumnus of Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience, Soul Creole and more; he’s also a current member of Smoov Ras & The Reflection, Dustin Gaspard & Freetown Sound and others, and he’s appeared on stage with Buckwheat Zydeco, Tab Benoit, Queen Ida, Marcia Ball, David Egan and Gary Clark Junior. Hogie “Earthangel” Siebert (guitar, vocals) is a familiar face in the world of zydeco, having performed with Corey & The Zydeco Hot Peppers, Zydeco Force, The Creole Cowboys; she currently plays with The Vibes (r ‘n’ b). Wally Pierce (drums, vocals) backs Kevin Sekhani and formerly performed with Sassafras Jubilee and others. Rick Ducharme (fiddle, accordion, vocals — and sometimes mandolin, guitar and blues harp) is a former member of The Andy Smith Band, Yam Country and West Jet. Bill Fontenot (guitar, vocals) has performed with The Michot Brothers, Stranger Than Friction and others, and is one of the most gifted contemporary song writers in Acadiana.
The band’s namesake and spiritual/musical guru, “Downtown” David Brown (string bass), is a veteran of the music biz (Don’t Pet the Dog, The Scallawags) and also the originator and host (with girlfriend Fran Morton) of the Monday Manger potluck supper jam session famous in the Saint Streets area of Lafayette, Louisiana. Together, Downtown Brown & The Steamrollers celebrate the quirky, eclectic underbelly of Americana in its many splendid forms.
