Johanna Divine
Johanna Divine is a Knoxville-born songwriter, singer, and filmmaker whose Southern roots – from Tennessee to Texas, Florida to Louisiana – have inspired a soulful and wide-ranging body of work. Signed to Universal in 2012, with a forthcoming EP produced by eight-time Grammy winner Jay Newland (Norah Jones, Esperanza Spaulding), Divine is considered “one of the most promising songwriters to come along in years” by No Depression and ”absolutely superb” by the BBC’s own “Whispering” Bob Harris.
As a writer, Divine digs through the dusty things in our attics, finding lost treasures and painting them up new again. Her songs carry traces of the honkytonk, swamp pop, swing and blues absorbed in her native South, but the distinct voice, and the open heart behind it, are all her own. This rooted yet personal approach inspired TimeOut New York to call her music “lovely and impressive,” while Offbeat says she’s an artist “to keep an eye on.”
